The month of May is indeed a beautiful time to be in the Philippines. Light rainshowers come to quench the summer-dried earth, flowers bloom and the verdant scenery becomes a refreshing delight. May is also the month the whole world celebrates Mothers’ Day, and in the Philippines, May is the month when festivities are held in honor of the Blessed Mother. The Sagala, Flores de Mayo and other various Marian festivities are held in almost every town, from far-reaching provinces to bustling urban centers. These long-standing traditions have indeed evolved with the times, and this month we revisit the various Maytime festivals as they were held in the earlier part of the 20th century.
